Introduction to Home Automation

As I browse my daily tech blogs such as Gizmodo and Engadget, home automation always catches my eye.  I mean, who doesn’t want their home to have all the amazing features you would only see on TV or in a movie like Iron Man.  I knew that a lot of things were capable of being accomplished through home automation but boy was I in store for a lot when I came to Casaplex.

From their booth at the University of Maryland’s career fair to my first interview, Casaplex has done nothing but amaze me.  I knew I was in the right place.

Since my first day on the job, I knew that just because I was an intern doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be involved in any of the company’s projects.  It was quite the opposite actually:  my first day was a Friday and Derek signed me up for training at Crestron for the following Monday.  Now this had me excited.  Crestron would often come up in the tech blogs that I read so I knew exactly what they did.  Casaplex is also a dealer for Crestron and uses their systems for home automation, so I knew that I was going to be involved right away.

At Crestron training that week and the next, I learned quite a lot about their systems, how to create a program for control processors, how to design interfaces for the touch panels, etc.  It was definitely a lot to take in but well worth it.  This would set everything up for integration at Casaplex and my internship project, integrating Microsoft’s Kinect.  That alone, is a completely separate story…
